Born to Rosemary Anderson, a computer analyst, and Edward Anderson, who owned a film post-production company, Gillian spent her childhood moving to various places like Puerto Rico, Crouch End and Harringay in London. The family moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan when she was 11 years old and it was there that she attended Fountain Elementary and then City High-Middle School, a program for gifted students from where she graduated in 1986. She was a rather wild young woman as she had her nose pierced and dyed her hair in various hues in the beginning of 80′s. No wonder she was voted as “Most Bizarre,” “Class Clown”, “Most Likely to go Bald” and “Most Likely to be Arrested” by her high school classmates. Though initially interested in marine biology, she started acting in her high school productions. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1990 from DePaul University in Chicago. Her ever growing desire to learn more led her to participate in the National Theatre of Great Britain’s summer program at Cornell University.

At 22, she moved to New York and worked as a waitress while looking for a career in acting. Her first break came in the form of Alan Ayckbourn’s play, Absent Friends at the Manhattan Theatre Club for which she also won 1990-91 Theatre World “Newcomer” Award. She moved to Los Angeles in 1992 for better career options and after auditioning unsuccessfully for a year she decided to work for TV despite her earlier resolution never to do so. She worked in Home Fires Burning for a cable station, as well as the audio book version of Exit to Eden before breaking in main stream television in 1993 with the guest appearance in ‘Class of 96′. X- Files happened after she was attracted to its script involving a strong, independent, intelligent woman as a lead character. At that point she did not know that series would run for nine long seasons and she would win many awards for her portrayal of Agent Dana Scully. The long award list includes an Emmy Award, Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards for “Best Actress in a Drama Series.”

She remained active during the run of X- Files and worked in a few films like ‘House of Mirth’. She also participated in Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues and did a supporting role in English-language release of Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke.

She also portrayed Lady Dedlock in the BBC television adaptation of Charles Dicken’s novel Bleak House, and was nominated for a British Academy Television Award (BAFTA) for Best Actress and won the Broadcasting Press Guild Television and Radio Award for Best Actress for her role in the same. She also came second in the category of Best Actress 2005 BBC Drama website poll for her performance in the Bleak House and won nominations for Golden Satellite Award and Golden Globe for her role as Lady Dedlock. She was seen in two British movies during the year 2006- 2007 The Last King of Scotland and Straightheads besides X-Files: I want to Believe, which was released in 2008.
She will be seen portraying Nora in Ibsen’s ‘A Doll’s House’ in the London’s West End from May 14 to July 18, 2009.

For FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women poll, Anderson was voted the “Sexiest Woman in the World” in 1996.

Anderson married twice. She married Clyde Klotz, The X-Files series assistant art director in 1994 but the marriage ended in divorce in 1997. Together, they have a daughter, Piper Maru, who was born in 1994.
In 2004, she married Julian Ozanne, a documentary filmmaker. This marriage also lasted just 16 months and in April 21, 2006 they announced their separation.
Her current partner is Mark Griffiths, director of Au Pair film series with whom she has two sons, Oscar Griffiths (November 1st, 2006) and Felix Griffiths (October 15, 2008)

She is honorary spokesperson and patron of the Neurofibromatosis Association (based in the UK) and actively supports the research for finding the cure of neurofibromatosis. She also advocates the rights of animals and is a member of PETA.

Dana Scully

She is a Special Agent of FBI who is partnered with Agent Mulder as a debunker while they take up X- Files, the unsolved cases involving paranormal and aliens. She is a Catholic and always wears a golden cross given to her by her mother. She drifts away from her faith as she becomes engrossed in her career as a doctor and FBI agent but when she is diagnosed with cancer she returns to the fold of Catholicism and starts attending Mass again after her recovery. Though she has been shown to be the voice of reason, she has faith in religion and believes that God’s hand move through the action of people. This is bone of contention between Mulder and her as he believes that people are responsible for their actions.
